Star City Winners 2008

It is my great pleasure to annouce the winners of the Cabot District Star City Hike 2008:

US!

Yes, the simply superb 62nd Lemmings team romped home in a more than convincing 1st place, 10 points ahead of those in 2nd place. Comments from the bases included:

“Excellent teamwork”

Congratulations yet again, you see, all that effort and getting wet was worth it after all!

You heard it on the blog first!

Star City 2008

Well, there’s a surprise, another wet, windy and truly miserable night of weather for yet another 62nd Scout event.

It has to be a record.

We arrived back to base at Mendip Raceway at 4:30am, the sun, sorry the grey cloudy morning was starting to rise, at the same time as the heavens opened. We could see the finish in the distance, but the rain was so heavy we just got wet, nay soaked, nay dripping…

Upon returning to Bristol I heard on BBC 5Live that Lizzie ’someone or other’ from BBC Newsround started the 3 peaks challenge at 4:30 am this vary same morning. She was 20 mins off the summit of Ben Nevis, with Scafell Pike and Snowden to do in a total of 24 hours. Good luck to her, I’ll stop in with my cup of tea and squashed BLT sandwich thank you.

The 62nd ‘Lemmings’ team were brilliant of course. Major achievements include not moaning at all, good on you all. Getting a whopping 23 radioactive balls into the safety dump, another team managed nought. All the team standing on a rather small piece of newspaper, rather impressively so. Navigating around the Mendips at night in a stonking time. Congratulations to you all, I’m rather proud, sniff…

Oh ~ surviving that field of horses and cows was pretty good too. Especially that bloomin great big white beasty with the simply enormous, yes enormous, horns! I’m so glad he stepped out of the way (and that Dave was in front…)

Thank you to you all and also to the organisers  – much obliged.

Path… of death

Most things on email either get looked at quickly, as I have limited patience or thrown in the waste bin. However, occasionaly a little gem appears.

May I suggest this does not turn into a 62nd Scout trip, we’ll stick to the video thank you.

I’ve been some places in my time, washed out bridges and fast flowing rivers, dark suddenly appearing and still far from home, paths that don’t exist, places that look far more navigable on the map than they do in real life viscious animals etc. etc. What bothers me about this one though is who on earth in 1901 thought they could build such a thing… and why!? and how!?

2nd place…

News, just in:

Our exploits in the District Hike yesterday earned us 2nd place, fantabulous result! Well worth getting wet, exhausted and seized up legs for! The 167th Bulldogs came 1st with a time of 5 hours 39 minutes. We came in jointly with 77th at 5 hours 55 minutes.

A time difference of just 15 minutes (how long did that rugby game take!?)

Extra congratulations to that team then!

District Hiking…

Dave Rugby Leave it to Johnny, please…

Have not had a good yomp like that for ages. Very friendly group of Scouts, plenty of distractions from posh buildings to rugby, to cricket, to pooh sticks and big muddy puddles.

I managed to win at pooh sticks by a country mile pulping Dave into a measly second place. Whilst we were shadows, it was rather odd being bossed around by Scouts, imposing time limits and correcting leaders map reading for the sake of winning…

… that’s the spirit! Congratulations and thank you!

Cabot Hike

Further to the letter about the Cabot District Hike at Glenny Woods. The kit list mentioned OS Maps and map cases and compasses, we have these in the Group – so do not go out and buy them. We also have a small supply of first aid kits…
